FAQ

Why should I donate to AAR?

When you donate to AAR, you're doing more than just clearing out your art closet- you're helping fuel creativity in our community. Your donated supplies make it possible for local artists, students and makers to create without financial barriers. You're also helping reduce waste by giving materials a new life instead of sending them to the landfill. It's a simple way to give back, inspire others and keep creativity circulating right here in Alton!

How do you keep your art supplies so affordable?

We keep things affordable by mixing community donations with smart sourcing and a little creativity. Many of our supplies are donated by local artists, teachers, and makers who want to give unused materials a second life. We also keep overhead low by not having staff and being creative - using  as many free online services as possible for all of our marketing. That helps us keep prices low while reducing waste — and it means you can find unique treasures every time you stop by!

Why choose a for-profit model instead of a nonprofit?

We get this one a lot! Being a for-profit business actually gives us more flexibility to stay sustainable and creative with how we serve the community. It means we can reinvest what we earn right back into the store — keeping prices low, supporting local artists, and hosting classes and events that bring people together with a Pay What You Can or Donate Art Supplies model. Our goal is to make art affordable and accessible for everyone, and this model helps us do just that.

Where does the money go that the store makes?

Great question! Every dollar that comes in goes right back into keeping our shelves stocked, our prices low, and our doors open to the community. The money helps us cover everyday costs, time spent cleaning, sorting, pricing, promoting, hosting creative events, and keeping this space alive and inspiring for everyone. Our goal isn’t just to sell supplies — it’s to make sure creativity stays affordable and accessible for all.
